A/C Filter Choices
If your air conditioner unit is not functioning properly or you feel like your indoor air quality is not what it should be, it may be time to change the air filter in your cooling system. Ultracool recommends changing the filter in your Fort Lauderdale home regularly to avoid damages and costly repairs to your system. Before running out to the store, it’s important to consider every aspect of your home to ensure you get the perfect filter for your air conditioner!
When should I change my air filter?
Depending on your home’s environment, there are many different factors that come into play when it comes to changing your air filter. Some of these factors include:
- The type of filter you use
- Pets in your home
- Overall air quality
- Occupancy of your house
- Allergies of occupants
- And More!
All of these factors combine contribute to your home’s indoor air quality. Bacteria, toxins, dust and dirt traveling in the air are cleaned out by your filter. The more sources of pollutants, the more frequently you’ll have to replace your filter. As your go to AC Company Plantation, Sunrise, and other Fort Lauderdale area cities, we suggest that homes with pets and/or sensitive allergies replace their filters more frequently than homes without. The general rule of thumb is that: filters should be changed out every 30-90 days.
What type of air filter do I need?
Did you know filters have quality ratings? Different brands and types of AC units require different types of filters, however the more effective it is, the cleaner your air can be. These purifiers are rated on a number scale called the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating. The MERV rating indicates the effectiveness of the filter, and the higher the number, the better the filter.
- Flat panel-A generic filter with a low rating. Usually between 1 and 4, and does little to improve the indoor air quality
- Medium efficiency- This is a higher quality product than a flat panel and is capable of filtering small particulates. It has a rating of 5-13.
- High efficiency- A high-capacity filter with a MERV rating of between 14 and 16. Be sure to check with an AC company like Ultracool Air Conditioning & Heating to see if your system can handle a high efficiency filter.
